Two-back attacks not dead yet
7:00 am October 22, 2013, by GHSF Daily

While spread offenses and single-back formations are more and more common, the value of having two great rushing threats in the backfield cannot be undersold.

Here are 12 teams that have a pair of backs who give their teams a potent 1-2 rushing attack. The players are listed with rushing attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

South Paulding

Chandler Burks: 86-870-12
Jae Bowen: 115-687-11

Notes: Unlike other quarterbacks on this list, Burks is a passer first with 1,664 yards through the air, but he has rushed for more than 110 yards in five of seven games and scored at least two touchdowns five times. Bowen has scored at least one touchdown in every game and twice has had games of 28 or more rushing attempts. South Paulding is 6-1.

Notebook: South Paulding’s Burks having breakout season
GHSF Daily / AJC Prep Zone - October 11th

Despite South Paulding’s setback against North Paulding last week, quarterback Chandler Burks is having a breakout season. He’s on pace to pass for 2,500 yards and rush for 1,250 in the regular season.

Burks is flourishing in South Paulding’s new spread offense, which coach Ed Koester said Burks learned in one week while recovering from an appendectomy the first week of June. "Tremendous leader," Koester said. "Knows what every position does on every play. Makes great decisions. Will always be the first to give everyone else credit."

His official numbers in South Paulding’s 5-1 start: 82-of-119 passing for 1,277 yards and 12 touchdowns; 666 yards rushing on 68 carries.

Things were no different Friday night.

Eighth-ranked Allatoona had a 14-point lead at halftime but it couldn’t hold off the Spartans, en route to a 48-45 overtime loss in the battle of Region 5AAAAA unbeatens.

South Paulding shows robust form on football field
Paulding Neighbor - October 23rd

The South Paulding Spartans have finished the previous three football seasons with identical records of 6-4, missing out on the postseason each time.

However, the 2013 campaign looks to mark a change for the Spartans’ program as it has already amassed six wins with three contests left and bring a two-game winning streak into this Friday’s contest at East Paulding for first place in Region 5-AAAAA.

FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Booster clubs do heavy lifting

Paulding Neighbor - August 23rd

Football booster clubs throughout West Metro vary in support and impact on the programs they serve.

Just as in many other sports, high school football programs have booster clubs, sometimes referred to as the school’s "touchdown club."

While booster clubs exist in some form throughout the region, their level of involvement differs from school to school.

South Paulding Spartan Touchdown Club vice president Tim Mitchell, owner of Paulding Sporting Goods, said the purpose of a booster club is to "support the coach in financials and logistics of the football team."

With an estimated 30 members, aside from the board members, anyone in the community can be involved in the Spartan Touchdown Club – though there is a fee which allows members to have a vote on financial decisions.

The club provides pregame meals for the players, helps prepare the field on game days, helps with maintenance, operates and prepares food for concession stands, provides meals to the coaches on Saturday when they watch film and provides player support in times of personal need.

The club at South is heavily involved with the football program, so much so that the president was on the hiring committee of the new head coach when former head coach Tim Glanton left.
